There are some other after effects that I noticed, like a little bit of an itchy feeling, plus feeling like I had a mild sunburn. But I was given some instructions as to what to do counteract these feelings and to speed up the recovery after each treatment.

1. I was told to clean my face when I got home with a moisturizing toner to get rid of any residue of the crystals they use or dead skin cells left behind. They actually did this for me after the treatment, but suggested I do it again when I got home.

2. After my skin was dry, I put on a good moisturizer. I was told to use this a few times a day for a few days to make sure my face didn’t peel.

3. I was also told to stay out of the sun for a week after each treatment because the sun’s UV rays can slow down recovery.

4. I definitely used a sunscreen whenever I did go out of the house since my face did feel a little sensitive.

I got into the habit of doing all of this after my home microdermabrasion treatments with the Dermanew home system I later bought.

Ask a lot of questions during your consultation. Don’t take my word or believe everything you read on the Internet about the results of the procedure. Tell your doctor or technician what you are expecting and find out if that is reasonable. He or she will have to take a close look at your skin and the extent of your acne before providing an honest answer.

Make sure you understand what the cost is and how many treatments you may need. You don’t want to get started, just to find out you can’t afford to keep going.

Find out if there is anything you need to do to prepare for your treatments. Before I started mine, whether it was for my acne or just to improve my skin, I was told to stop using the Retin-A product I was using five days before my treatment and to stay out of the sun. I’m not a smoker, but I found out that smokers should not smoke for a week before a treatment in order to improve the circulation in the skin. Being able to stop smoking for a week is a whole other story!

If your acne is what is considered to be moderate to severe, you will not be considered for microdermabrasion and you should not consider doing it at home. Moderate acne is when you have a large number of blackheads and whiteheads, red sores, and pustules, all of which can be seen from several feet away. We won’t even go into the definition of severe acne. Microdermabrasion on these forms of acne can cause more harm than good. In fact, using microdermabrasion, professional or otherwise, can even cause permanent skin damage.

You also shouldn’t use microdermabrasion if you have rosacea, which is a different skin condition sometimes mistaken for acne. It can cause your face to look red and swollen. Sometimes the redness can be very persistent and there may even be some pimples. But don’t mistake this for acne and don’t use microdermabrasion.

In short, if your condition is more serious than a lot of blackheads and whiteheads and a few pimples, please don’t try microdermabrasion. No professional will do it and you should stay away from the home systems.

If you have had mild acne “cured” with microdermabrasion, you need to remember that this is not permanent. Acne can always come back. This is when you may want to get the home system for “maintenance” reasons.

The outer layer of skin is the epidermis and this is where the effects of microdermabrasion first appear. The treatments make the epidermis thicker since each time dead cells are removed, new cells are being generated more rapidly than they normally would. Apparently, the new cells are joined in a more consistent and tighter way than they older cells were. Even though in the first day or so after microdermabrasion the skin is drier than usual, within a week it start to become more hydrated.

The middle layer of skin is called the dermis and this goes through the biggest transformation with microdermabrasion. This layer of skin also gets thicker and healthier, but more importantly, the treatments increase the number and thickness of the skin’s collagen fibers, and they, too, are more tightly packed. Microdermabrasion also increases elastin in the skin, making it more supple. According to the studies, microdermabrasion also increases the blood flow in the dermis, which helps the skin repair itself more efficiently.

All of this adds up to skin that not only looks healthier, but is healthier.

My friend made an appointment for a consultation at a spa rather than a dermatologist, and ended up signing her daughter up for the recommended package of six treatments for acne scarring. Even though my friend was skeptical, she decided her sixteen-year-old daughter’s self esteem was pretty important. Plus, she had discovered that these treatments at a spa were cheaper than going to a dermatologist. It takes several treatments before you begin to see an improvement, but in the meantime, you’ll have fewer breakouts and blackheads.

After my first few treatments, I began to hear about home microdermabrasion kits that would work on mild acne like mine. I definitely wanted to check into these, because, despite the fact that the treatments were working, I wanted to save a little money. There are a variety of these kits out there, some more expensive than others and some that work better than others.
