There can be side effects with professional microdermabrasion treatments regarding a change in the balance of the skin color. This is not an issue with the home kits. There aren’t really any official side effects when giving yourself a microdermabrasion treatment, but there are things that can happen when you don’t follow the instructions or if you are prone to acne.

If you have a slight case of acne or have oily skin, when you first use your kit you may experience a small breakout. The professionals refer to this as purging because the bacteria under the skin is pulled up to the surface and causes pimples. This is far more likely to happen with a professional treatment, but if it can happen with home treatments as well. It may occur if you are treating your skin more often than is recommended or if you are abrading too long or too hard.

Some women get impatient for results. The creams that come with the at-home kits are quite a bit milder than the professional creams and the professional tools are much more efficient. Naturally, abrading at home is going to take longer to see results than with a professional treatment. Don’t be tempted to use your microdermabrasion tool more often than what is adviced or rub harder and longer during your sessions. Your only result may be red, irritated skin, and even some pimples.

In Part 4 of the article find out if you are not a good candidate for using a microdermabrasion kit.
